What is IPL – Intense Pulsed Light Treatment?
IPL is a non-invasive light based technology used to remove unwanted hair and improve many skin conditions. Such conditions as age spots, sun spots, freckles, superficial capillaries and other unsightly discolouration of the skin can be eliminated using this technology. IPL is also incredibly effective for those of us who suffer from facial redness and can even stimulate fibroblast causing increased collagen production in your skin for a more natural, lively, healthier looking you!
How does IPL work?
A fully trained therapist will apply a specially designed hand piece to your skin and generate an intense pulse of light which will be absorbed by targets in your skin. The light delivered from the hand piece is delivered at high intensity during a very short period of time. It is this rapid discharge of light that provides the high energy levels required for each IPL treatment to be effective.

How does IPL work?
IPL systems work on the same principles as lasers in that light energy is absorbed into particular target cells with colour (chromophores) in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which causes damage to the specific target area. IPL systems are different to lasers in that they deliver many wavelengths in each pulse of light instead of just one wavelength, and therefore a variety of skin concerns can be treated.

Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare, but is is possible to experience a slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment area. This usually disappears within hours, Even more rare, blisters or bruising may occur, but this also typically disappears in a short period of time.
Lastly, some discoloration of the skin may follow treatment, but will return to normal within a week or two. It is typical to resume normal activities following treatment. Stay out of the sun, do not use tanning booths and use a high SPF sunscreen.

Is IPL treatment suitable for everyone?
Many people will benefit from IPL treatments for hair removal and skin rejuvenation, but those who are pregnant, on certain medications, diabetic or have a history of keloid scarring may not be suitable. IPL treatment is not compatible with concurrent sun exposure. Some conditions cause by hormonal changes ie during pregnancy, menopause or puberty, and therefore may disappear for some time but will generally return.
Pre-treatment guidelines:
-Avoid unprotected sun exposure for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment. Ensure you are using sunblock regulary and avoid using sunbeds.
